Dear All,

Please find below details of free professional development opportunities at the
Imperial War Museum in Manchester and London. The days will run from 10.30
until 5 on 20th and 27th February and be broadly similar, taking advantage of
local organisations where possible. Please reply to me direct with queries or
to book.

InSight into…

And you never know, one of us could be Prime Minister…we’d know what to do
Joe, 13, Imperial War Museum learning consultation

One of the greatest challenges for educators is to encourage young people to
be actively engaged with their community, political issues and the world
beyond. IWM research shows that young people do want to be involved, but
many lack the skills and experience to feel confident in shaping their own
future and in becoming global citizens.

Imperial War Museum is developing new approaches to learning about, and
practically engaging with these issues through examining historic and
contemporary conflicts, peace processes and conflict resolution, and
eyewitness perspectives.

We need your help to shape this. On 20 February (at IWM North in
Manchester) and 27 February (at IWM London) we’re holding free professional
development days for teachers, museum educators and other education
professionals. Building on the successful professional development
programmes run by Their Past Your Future at the Imperial War Museum, you
can expect:

•	Networking opportunities with other education professionals
•	Meetings with eyewitnesses from conflict resolution/development
agencies and NGOs
•	Signposting to developing subject knowledge about conflict resolution
•	Building confidence in dealing with difficult subjects
•	First hand knowledge of consultation and evaluation processes used
in developing the project and the chance to contribute and shape its future
direction
•	Evidence based discussion about the value of experiential learning
and links to social and emotional aspects of learning and the personal learning
and thinking skills agenda
•	A chance to explore Museum displays
•	An on-the-day discount in the IWM shop
•	Lunch
•	Travel expenses of up to £50

Previous participants on Imperial War Museum professional development
programmes have said:

‘It’s made me think academically and this has reinvigorated my teaching’

‘It was like going from black and white to colour or 2D to 3D’

‘It made me realise how big historical events have a tremendous impact on the
lives of individuals’

There are 50 places at each venue, allocated on a first come first served
basis. Booking closes on Friday 12 February.

Travel expenses for those in Scotland and Northern Ireland and other outlying
parts of the UK may be negotiable, please contact us to discuss your
situation. Please also contact us if you have any specific access
requirements.

To reserve your place or to discuss any queries, please contact Amy Ryall,
