Panel: Information Technology and Gaming Cultures in East Asia
BACKGROUND
Category: Information and Communication Technology
This session seeks to discuss broadly on topics on information and
communication technology (ICT), game technology and culture which have
been developed in East Asian countries. The session will specially
focus on two issues of ICT in East Asia. First, we will investigate
how different sociocultural backgrounds of East Asian countries have
shaped diversified trajectories of ICT in each society, and vice
versa. Second, we will examine how diversely developed ICT in each
society has mutually influenced in the East Asian countries. Through
debate on these issues, we can deeply understand the construction of
ICT in East Asia.
For this purpose, Sung Won Kim will examine the co-construction of
users and ICT in the case of PC bang (PC game room) in Korea. Kim will
illuminate how Korean users such as the white-collar jobless who were
fired from major firms after Asian financial crisis in 1997, the youth

of ICT. Arisa Ema will examine the conflict between privacy and safety
in ubiquitous networking in Japan. Ema will discuss what kind of
technological development are conducted under the good name of
security in Japan, and questions whether those systems actually
assures "security." Young Nam will investigate the construction of
game industry in Korea during the 1990s and the 2000s. Nam will
explore how sociocultural factors influenced the biased development of
