Obviously I can't speak for everyone but I know of a number of people who have
spent time out to go on internships etc, (I appreciate that some people's
supervisors can be funny about missed bench time).
Anyway, I would try and gauge your PI's reaction to the field in general before
you write them off entirely - my supervisor has been really supportive of me -
he's OK'd everything I've wanted to go on and sorted out the money for me to go
on the UWE science communication masterclass. Speaking from experience I would
have been much worse off without talking to him about it!
