Dear all,
*/Hands-On Risk and Probability Show/*
What are the chances of winning the lottery? How much of a football
team's league position is due to luck and how much is due to skill? What
are the chances of a false positive test result in security or medical
screening? Which newspaper headlines are telling the truth? Can you spot
a scam before you fall for it?
Probability and statistics help to provide answers to questions like
these, forming a strong foundation for mathematics education.
The Hands-On Risk and Probability Show addresses the importance of
probability and statistics through an interactive presentation and 'Who
wants to be a Mathionaire' Gameshow workshop. Students participate in
various activities and use voting technology to respond to multiple
choice questions. The questions are designed to teach them key
principles involving probability, statistics, problem solving and
lateral thinking.

/*Mathematics Enrichment and Enhancement Grants*/
The Royal Institution is offering a limited number of grants of up to
£500, funded by the Clothworkers' Foundation, to help cover the costs to
state schools of arranging Enrichment and Enhancement (E&E) activities
listed in the STEM Directories (this would include the Hands-On Risk and
Probability Show). The scheme is designed to enhance the mathematical
experience in schools, support teachers' professional development, and
raise awareness and use of enrichment activities and of the
www.stemdirectories.org.uk website. Preference will be given to schools
that have not had external E&E activities in mathematics in recent
years, and the funded E&E activities must take place over the 2010
Spring or Summer term. To apply, please complete the attached
application form and return to the Royal Institution - if you would like
to apply for a grant to cover the cost of the Risk and Probability Show
or another MMP activity we also encourage you to contact us to discuss
available dates.
With best wishes from the NRICH Team.
