medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From the late twelfth/early thirteenth century, all episcopal elections
needed to be confirmed by the Apostolic See in any case (rather than,
for example, by their metropolitans). But that was a catch-all policy
not specific to abbots. Si abbatem was an additional requirement for the
heads of exempt houses.
