***apologies for cross posting***
Dear all,
Before Christmas I asked the list for some advice around the legal position when disposing of weeded stock items. Many thanks for all the responses I received I have summarised them as requested.
* Most respondents stated that there was no known legal position on stock disposal within their organisation.
* Some respondents stated that their organisations had detailed policies/procedures around stock disposal and the necessary de-processing that needs to be undertaken before items are put on sale. Many had policies related to organisational disposal of items like laptops etc. which also applied to library stock items. However, most respondents stated that their organisations did not have robust policies and procedures in this area and it was something they were looking to develop.
* Several respondents binned these items after weeding ensuring that all items have been clearly marked 'withdrawn'.
* Others offered the items for sale to organisational staff/students with a clear 'health warning' stating that they are now out of date, particularly with regards to pharmacological and clinical texts (which could prove to be dangerous).
* Many organisations retained a spreadsheet to ensure a record of all deleted stock is maintained (some library management systems can also do this).
* Some respondents stated that they use companies who specialise in purchasing ex library stock, including a company called http://www.anybook.biz/ who removes items for free and give the library a return on any items sold.
* One respondent warned of the dangers of allowing staff to purchase stock as you may well end up with it again if that person retires or moves on and their office is cleared!
Many thanks to all who responded, this information will help shape our future policies and procedures in this area.
