I have recently embarked on MCLIP, pathway 2 and I couldn't agree more
with Keith's top tips, especially the pre-requisite requirement to "look
outside the box", for example, the Library environment. I always
remember and try to instil within critical thought, the watch words of
strategic thinking: Where am I now, where do I want to be, how do I get
there...

I confirm Esther's view that the Chartership Board assesses all
applications against standard criteria. I support her involving her CSO
and the office early and am pleased to read how effective that seems to
have been. As well as your mentor, your CSO and the office are there to
help through your development period.
Here are some top tips. The Board does often notice a difference in the
standard of application from Pathway 1 candidates, who have had the
benefit of specific structured learning related to professional
practice, and Pathway 2 candidates who, essentially, have to get this in
other ways. Working through your ppdp with your mentor is therefore
critical to ensure that you gain a rounded view of the profession, and
have developed key skills of professional evaluation and reflection.
While you are putting your portfolio together, I suggest you refer
regularly to the assessment form the Board will use.
http://www.cilip.org.uk/jobs-careers/qualifications/cilip-qualifications
/chartership/pages/chartershipforms.aspx Finally, a portfolio where your
evidence and reflection on practice is focused on daily toil in your
library is very unlikely to be acceptable. The assessors will be looking
for understanding of and professional reflection on matters of concern
and interest to the profession as a whole, with some evidence of
thinking through what this means for your professional practice and the
service you work for.

I've registered as a pathway 2 candidate last summer. I agree with Jill
that the portfolio itself should really be the same because it will be
measured by the same criteria. If in any doubt about the Chartership
regulations - I've found CILIP's Quals department very helpful.
I approached the regional CSO because a) my university degree isn't
British (and doesn't sound like a British equivalent), and b) I'd worked
in and for libraries for 10 years and wondered whether I really needed
the 2 year full-time equivalent work experience, esp. since I'm only on
part-time at the moment (which would've meant more than 4! years). The
CSO asked for my CV and a brief accompagnying note/explanation, she got
in touch with Quals and they gave me a) permission to register under
pathway 2, and b) advised to back-date the PPDP to cover the experience
period (all in consultation with my mentor of course).
I'm still in rather early stages (only about to submit the first PPDP)
but just the option of pathway 2 is great - it's THE possibility for me
to finally get some professional recognition! And I would think that
CILIP/the assessors expect to find less straight forward ways of
professional development.
Regards,
Esther
