Yes that is good news but relates to PostZon, which positions postcodes.
I was talking about all the road names and house numbers as well, which
I think is still a while off becoming available.

You will get part of your wish, Ian - postcode information available
free from April 2010: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8402327.stm.
I rather assume that the bank sorting code information belongs to banks,
which contrary to appearances are not part of the public sector.
The launch of data.gov.uk got reasonable publicity this morning - eg
Radio 4 - which probably produced more hits on the site than just this
list's members. So yes it probably had some issues with the traffic. Of
course, the developers could have spent scads of taxpayer's money
proofing the site against a traffic level that will probably never be
repeated. That would have made us all happy, yes?

I think they had also hoped that the open-source and hobbyist
communities would pick it up and do useful things.
I had a look around having signed up a little while back and been given
access to the data sets, but there wasn't much of interest to me.
I will celebrate the day that the entire postcode system and list of
banking sort codes and their respective locations will be released
publicly, for an app I'm working on to reduce fraud. But currently they
have my local dentist and postbox, the locations of which I already know
about!
Ian

either the public sector pays to do that, or it gives the raw data to
the commercial sector, and they will reasonably expect a return on their
investment.
