Is this the case? Are there higher salaries and more opportunities for designers with research sills and research degrees? Where and in what areas of design? In the US there are very few graphic designers with research degrees so I haven't heard of the opportunities. Are these opportunities for design positions that involve research, research positions that interact with design, or a real combined design/research activity?

Are you saying that the tenured studio staff react against researchers primarily because the researchers have greater salaries and opportunities but that these are not opportunities that are lost to the studio staff? I'm unclear on how this happens.
