Major new book which turns out to be a paper.....

But when I go through it, I wonder how it will deal with the matter of students complaining to the staff student consultative committee about this method of work, which I have used ever since I started, for they are paying 3k stg to be given small bullets of truth on powerpoint, six points to a slide, six slides to a lecture, like everyone else does. And these should be on Blackboard, like everyone else does. Then the external examiner, who similarly complains about how they are supposed to work out for themselves what might constitute assessment, for if you have research and enquiry then you are constituting a different agency between knowing and doing.

What I worked out a while ago was library5.0, which allows us to work out what was the strength of libraries before computing became ubiquitous, say 1964, then how the first generation adapted, then the arrival of the internet, then web2.0, so we have five cases. There is I think a lot to learn looking through this thread.

There has been a meeting here on intelligent transport systems, while the Mayor for London is consulting on Integrated Transport Networks for the future London. Intelligent document services, might be a label for a knew type of learning activity involving libraries, document services of all sorts, and the victims. Anyone buying into it?

Developing Undergraduate Research And Inquiry / Mick Healey and Alan
Jenkins / The Higher Education Academy / June 2009

=20

Executive summary

=20

This paper argues that all undergraduate students in all higher
education institutions should experience learning through, and about,
research and inquiry. In undergraduate research, students learn and are
assessed in ways that come as close as possible to the experience of
academic staff carrying out their disciplinary research.

=20

The origins of our paper lie, in part, in previous published work
worldwide - including our work - on bringing together teaching and
disciplinary research. In particular, the paper stems from the United
States undergraduate research movement, which started by providing
research opportunities for selected students in selected institutions.
We argue, as does much recent US experience, that such curricular
experience should and can be mainstreamed for all or many students
through a research-active curriculum. We argue that this can be achieved
through structured interventions at course team, departmental,
institutional and national levels. The argument is complemented by a
large selection of mini case studies, drawn particularly from the UK,
North America and Australasia.

=20

This paper addresses four main audiences:

=20

-- Academic staff (or faculty in North America) who are interested in
engaging their students in research, either as part of the curriculum or
as co-researchers;

=20

-- Course leaders, department heads and staff with faculty and
institutional responsibilities for research and teaching and learning
who wish to develop strategies and practices to support undergraduate
students undertaking and understanding the nature of research;

=20

-- Staff engaged in educational and research development in
universities, including Academy staff in the Subject Centres and in
Academy York, who support staff in developing linkages between research
and teaching;

=20

-- Institutional and national higher education policy makers, including
professional bodies and those giving research grants, who are concerned
to develop policies to encourage undergraduates to become involved with
research.

Mobile and Handheld Technology Accessibility Forum On LinkedIn

=20

With the ongoing focus on exploiting mobile and other handheld
technologies, this forum seeks to bring together mobile software
developers, researchers and others involved or interested in making
these devices and the applications that run on them accessible and
usable by persons with different disabilities. End-users with visible
and non-visible disabilities who use mainstream and adapted mobile and
handheld devices and associated applications are likewise encouraged to
contribute to the dialogue.=20

=20

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) sharing best
practice, guidelines, and first-hand experience developing applications
on mobile/handheld platforms that are made to be accessible to users
with different disabilities; issues related to mobile learning
accessibility; information on the latest innovations in mainstream and
adaptive mobile/handheld hardware accessibility (e.g., cell phones,
smartphones, GPS devices, iPods); along with evaluation and feedback
from end-users with disabilities who are attempting to use these
technologies. As this area of accessibility evolves, it is expected
conversations will as well.=20

=20

As with any other public forum, members are reminded to exercise good
judgment and conduct when contributing, in terms of respecting both
workplace confidentiality that many are bound by, and the diversity of
opinions that will naturally be expressed here.=20
