Dear All,
The second of the Centre for Sustainable Transport / Centre for Transport and Society Moving the Region Forward seminars was delivered by Professors Graham Parkhurst and Iain Docherty at the University of the West of England, Bristol, on Wednesday 9 December. The speakers considered the choices underpinning and role of transport infrastructure in regional economic development, and made a range of insightful - and sometimes controversial - points about these issues in regional and broader contexts. Graham discussed the difficulties of securing agreement among stakeholders, and Iain was especially critical of government's capacity to actually deliver transport infrastructure, and invited discussion on the impact of advocacy and the need for more lateral thinking in the transport sector. Both speakers' powerpoint presentations are available at www.ssb.plymouth.ac.uk/cst<http://www.ssb.plymouth.ac.uk/cst>
The next seminar is on Wednesday 27 January 2010 at the University of Plymouth. Professors Phil Goodwin and Glenn Lyons will be discussing 'Business Attitudes to Transport'. This draws upon their recently completed study for the Department for Transport. The study has considered the relative importance to businesses of transport in relation to other factors and has also critically reflected upon the robustness of the existing evidence on business attitudes. The study report can be found on the DfT's website - http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/scienceresearch/social/businessattitudes/. The CBI will also respond to Phil and Glenn's seminar presentation.
Attendance at the seminar is free but please register if you are planning to attend by emailing Jon Shaw at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> The seminar will start at 6pm and there will be a wine reception afterwards. We will provide you of venue details by return.
