Supermen and Dark Knights at Birkbeck
ĦUncover the art of the Graphic Novel
A quick look at any cinema's show times is likely to feature a film 'based on
the graphic novel'. In recent years we've seen the re-birth of Batman,
Superman and Spiderman, as well as successful adaptations of Iron Man,
Watchmen and Hellboy. All have paper roots as comics or graphic novels. But
for every Batman Begins there's a Catwoman waiting to prove that box-office
success is not guaranteed, so what is it about these stories that filmmakers
find so hard to resist? Two new courses starting in January will explore the art
of cartoons, comic books and graphic novels.
In Supermen and Dark Knights: Anime, Comic Books and Film, students will
have the opportunity to examine the history and development of the comic
book at the cinema, as well as seeing early examples of comic book
adaptations, superhero films, Anime, and graphic novels.
Drawing for the Graphic Novel, which is run in partnership with the Cartoon
Museum, gives aspiring cartoonists and visual artists an introduction to the art
of the graphic novel. Students can examine the work of contemporary graphic
novelists and develop the techniques for cartoon drawing, through practical
sessions run by a professional cartoonist and guest speakers. This module
complements Writing for the Graphic Novel.
