1.	Research Assistant, Tolerance, Pluralism and Social Cohesion in Europe 
(vacancy ref. 15199)

You will work principally on the British team's contribution in relation to 
the theoretical framing of the project and its application to the UK within 
the EU-funded project "Tolerance, Pluralism and Social Cohesion: Responding 
to the Challenges of the 21st Century in Europe" (ACCEPT), a cross-national 
collaboration with thirteen other countries.

The project, led by Professor Tariq Modood, studies the principles, 
practices, and institutional arrangements that are needed to promote 
tolerance and acceptance of cultural differences. In particular, the 
project questions whether European societies have become more or less 
tolerant recently, what tolerance means in different countries but also in 
the same country under different circumstances and for different issues, 
and whether traditional conceptions of tolerance are adequate to deliver 
mutual respect amongst citizens.

The research is multi-faceted: conceptual, normative, qualitative 
interviews and analysis, study of media discourses and policies and is 
particularly focused on the role of religion in public life. You will be a 
member of the University Research Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and 
Citizenship and part of the international research networks collaborating 
on this research and will participate fully in the activities of the 
Department of Sociology.

You should have training and qualifications in a relevant social science 
discipline and either hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate. 
Practical research experience with qualitative and data-sets and knowledge 
of research methods will be an advantage.

If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent 
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research

2.	Research Associate, Muslim Participation in Contemporary Governance in 
Britain (vacancy ref. 15201)

You will work on an ESRC/AHRC funded project on Muslim Participation in
Contemporary Governance (funded within the ESRC/AHRC Religion and Society
Programme).

This 30-month qualitative research project investigates the emerging
significance of Muslim religious values, practices and engagement within
contemporary governance in the UK. It explores: how current government
strategies and policies relating to citizenship recognise and respond to
Muslim religious difference; how participatory forms of governance engage
with Muslim groups, religious values and identities; and the impact of
Muslims' participation in governance on policy processes and outcomes and
for the organisation of and relations between Muslim civil society
organisations more broadly. The research will be based on analysis of
policy documents and qualitative research on participatory governance
initiatives at national and local levels.

You will join a research team, based at the University of Bristol,
comprising Dr Therese O'Toole (PI), Professor Tariq Modood (CI), Dr Nasar
Meer (University of Southampton) and a Research Assistant (to be
appointed).  You will be a member of the University Research Centre for the
Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship and will participate fully in the
activities of the Department of Sociology. You should have research
interests in public and governance discourses relating to Muslims and Islam
within the UK, have practical research experience of qualitative research
methods, and either hold, or be close to completing, a doctorate.
