Hi Doug,
There are various levels of CC licenses that you need to be aware of
when looking at CC works. If the works are being distributed and not
changed in anyway, and you are distributing free of charge, you should
be able to use works that are of any of the following licenses:
Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives (by-nc-nd)
Attribution Non-commercial (by-nc)
Attribution Share Alike (by-sa)
However, if you are looking to change anything, you will be limited to
the second two.

Finding CC material is still significantly difficult though.
Typically when I try to find them, I use the advanced search on Google
Images and choose the appropriate "usage rights" setting.
