Many thanks for flagging up my project via the Bolton Evening News article,
http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/4782259.Photographer_will_bring_every
day_life_into_focus/.
A couple of things need correcting; I was commissioned in November and am
photographer-in-residence for six months, I have no plans to use hidden
cameras so that residents can be 'caught on camera as they go about their
everyday lives as part of a Humphrey Spender-style Mass Observation'. I do
want to produce work that reflects and represents the area however this work
will be produced through engagement and negociation. As you can imagine I
need consent and permission before taking images.
I am obviously influenced by the work of Mass Observation and the archive in
the Worktown Gallery - and would welcome any posts or debate on similar
modern day investigations however though my work is rooted in documentary I
realise that it would be impossible to 'develop a true image of Breightmet'.
Also I won't be taking,' candid and posed snaps'. Which brings me to
the 'street life' photograph printed with the article, it represents the kind of
photography the writer had in mind but doesn't represent what I'm hoping to
achieve, its also not been taken by me. Disappointingly I wasn't asked to
provide an image and have in fact already photographed the lady on the right!
Work from the project will be online soon and I'll keep this board informed. In
the meantime I'd welcome any suggestions, pointers or debate on the project,
documentary and staged photography, Mass Obs, Bolton, etc etc
