Dear all, I've just received the email below. This is very interesting. I will encourage their involvement, unless there are any reasons why we shouldn't. Lesley is a member of the NTA Skills consortuim, whose list I used to circulate the core curriculum proposal. Andy

Andy
Thanks for your email. I was really pleased to see the work moving ahead. As an SSC, we believe that its vital that employers have a substantial involvement in the design and evaluation of learning and development programmes, so that we can make sure that people are gaining the skills and knowledge that they will need in work. I will be asking my colleague Pamela Padden to seek the views and input of employers in the Justice sector and feed these back to you. You clearly have links with a range of employing organisations and other D&A networks, but I could not see anyone on your mailing list from our sister SSC Skills for Health.
Can you clarify whether SfH have been contacted to feed into this work, or whether it would be helpful if I made contact with them re this?
Many thanks
Lesley

Subject: HE Core Curriculum
Dear All,
In the Higher Education sector a group of at least 18 universities in England and Scotland deliver drug and alcohol education and training programmes. We met in November and those attending agreed to compile a proposed list of core subject areas for inclusion in our programmes.
At the NTA Core Symposium meeting on 4th December I handed out the draft list to those present. It was agreed I circulate it to you all for comment and feed back.
The HE group hope this exercise will mark the beginning of a process involving universities, service providers and all other stakeholders, that leads to a standardisation of drug and alcohol teaching programme content across England and Scotland.
Would you please look at the list and return it to me adding your comments, additions and priorities etc. We hope this way forward will be both useful and practical to all those involved. The aim is to turn out the well qualified staff required who will understand biopsychosocial and spiritual aetiologies of problem substance use and be able to deliver effective research, therapeutic interventions, aftercare and reintegration strategies for this vulnerable client group.
Thank you for taking time to respond to this. Andy
