Hi everyone,
Can I just say that we all need to realise that most major national
museums charge for all kinds of services, including reproduction of
images and one would assume they would need the income least?! I have
personal experience of this recently, having managed a large redisplay
project and having to source images from elsewhere.
The charges were not small - none were less than £100, despite people
being kind and giving me discount. We are a local authority museum and
we don't charge for entry and the exhibition is a permanent display but
we still had to pay. This is the commercial world we live in.
We do charge for reproduction of images etc.
We don't charge for enquiries and yet the Reference library in the same
building as us does charge after 30mins. I would say charging would
weed out those people who really want to know about the object and those
who want valuations and those who could actually be bothered to do the
research themselves. A lot of the time I look up information on the
internet for object IDs. I told a member of the public that they could
look on the internet for free in the library to find out more (as our
internet was down ) and he told me thats why he brought it into the
museum and he currently had better things to do with his time...! As I
was in the middle of managing the above project, I had to stop myself
saying I also had a million better things I could be doing with my time
at the moment..!
Another example I have currently is an obejct ID for three medals. On
one of the medals; it says the date, what its for and the name of the
person it was awarded to....so what else do they want to know?!
Can you tell I have a bee in my bonnet about this at the moment?!

Our small market town museum does not charge for enquiries. We
encourage researchers of whatever status to use our library, archives
and objects for their research purposes. We can introduce complete
beginners to research methods and take satisfaction in encouraging and
skilling people to take their interests on through the county museums,
archives and libraries. We encourage researchers to deposit copies of
their research and to join our volunteers. Hopefully this will lead to
a steady supply of skilled volunteers.
Our only exception is a charge we make for family history
investigations we undertake for enquirers. Current fee for this - £40.
No charges for reproductions except covering photocopying and postage
except when images are requested for commercial use.
The day we charge for idents or enquiries is the day I step out of the
sector.
