In South Australia visit
Victor Harbor, park under one
of the many Norfolk pines
each with its bronze plaque naming
a dead Great War soldier.
Walk to the causeway that
crosses to Granite Island.
Note the horse-tram times: last
from island, 4.30.
Watch: tiny, heading this way,
shaping large as slow draught-horse
and double-decker tram
piled with happy tourists.
Now upon us, all cameras busy.
Clydesdale, vast feet and head,
serene and powerful.
So large a creature, submissive
to so small a man.
Max Richards, on holiday
