Reshelving Targets for Library Services, Main Library, University of Birmingham
The reshelving operation at the Main Library, University of Birmingham is a very busy operation, handling in excess of 600,000 items per annum, with our peak period being Easter each year . Our current key performance indicators (KPIs) for reshelving are:
*
All material from our High Demand collection will be reshelved within 6 hours of return
*
All other material will be reshelved within 48 hours of return
We are constantly working to improve the efficiency of our reshelving and get the books back on the shelves for our users as quickly as possible. To this end, we are about to conduct a review of our performance in meeting our reshelving KPIs. As part of this it would be very useful to be able to benchmark our KPIs against those of other institutions. I would therefore be very grateful if you could spare the time to answer the following questions:
· Approximately how many items per annum do you reshelve?
· Do you have any targets for reshelving of library materials?
If yes:
o What are they?
o Do they apply throughout the year or are they suspended/adjusted at certain times, (eg during peak reshelving periods; summer vacation etc)
o How do you monitor performance in achieving these targets?
o Who does the reshelving? (specifically I am interested to know whether you have dedicated shelving staff or whether shelving is done by staff as part of a wider role)
o Do you have to make any changes to staffing to cope with increased demand at certain times of year in order to meet reshelving targets?
I would be happy to summarise responses for the list.
Thank you.
