Dear Danny and all,
The most recent update I received from the Member Network Services Advisor at the BPS was in late October. At that time 161 Society members had emailed the BPS (at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) expressing their interest in joining a Community Psychology Section if established. 450 such messages are needed (1% of the BPS membership) before the Society will hold a formal ballot of members. There is thus still some way to go before a ballot is called. I understand the Society will keep accepting emails for the foreseeable future.
David

Hi Craig,
I agree that the BPS is problematic in many ways. It is as much a manifestation of contemporary capitalism as Starbuck's (though less successful). It is a manifestation of brutal managerialism with its outsourcing. You have drawn attention previously to its record as an employer. The Society is opposed to the aims of many community critical psychologists: for example, it functions to promote the interests of professionals over non professionals, polices the internalisation by students of reactionary forms of neo-positivist psychology in our Universities, is a massive generator of ideologically problematic psy-complex technicians and its practices are an impediment to critical thinking and action.
What is an effective strategy in such a situation? I don't think a community psychology section would change the Society appreciably from the inside. The Society is too well defended and too essential to the status quo. Like you I was opposed to supping with the Spciety for many years. However I came to think a CP Section could provide another platform for CP voices in the UK, that a CP Section status could provide another forum for organisation, a newsletter for communication, conference visibility, a rationale for representation at international level, some useful forms of legitimacy for progressive psych (if that is not a contradiction in terms) in some contexts and access to Society resources. Section development is a flawed and ideologically dangerous route but these are desperate times and we need in my view to take risks, be vigilant but use whatever tools are too hand, whilst realising they are usually double edged. No doubt JISCmail is problematic if one looks below the surface but that dos not mean we can not utilise it progressively for some communication purposes.
I respect your position but hope your message will not discourage BPS members on this list from from writing to support the proposal. Over 400 people must support the proposal before the next step is taken ( a member vote) and so far well under 200 have contacted the BPS.
David

The BPS has been a business for a number of years. Tho' it trades as an academic and scientific body with Charitable status, it is to all intents and purposes simply a corporation complete with investments and the rest. Some would no doubt argue that such practices are a proper way for the Society to conduct its affairs, e.g., the recent decision to "outsource" one of its departments to Oakengates is just good business sense. Members, however might think twice before signing up to a sub-division of a corporate body if they see the formation of a Section as just another feather in the corporate cap. I fully understand the arguments about "changing the Society from within thru Community Psychology" practices but I suspect that a critical psychology perspective would be just that - far more critical.

Dear Craig,
Re. "for those still pursuing the Section idea you might like to access the BPS accounts and see where the money goes.C"
Could you be more explicit about your concerns please?
Thanks
David
