It is also true that the majority of Nighthawkers are from within the hobby
and reside in clubs and as detecting partners as the BBC showed. The problem
is every time this issue comes up some within the hobby like to stick this
great 'arms length' between themselves and the 'thieves with metal
detectors!' Sorry, but until those who run the hobby and those that run the
clubs get serious about dealing with these 'known elements' than it will be
brushed back under the ever-increasing pile under the carpet!
What is needed is a stronger will within our judicial system to convict such
perpetrators and then for the hobby to impose its own sanction where
possible. If the cost of being caught became more prohibitive then that
would at least trim this despicable practice that does harm the responsible
detectorist who record with the PAS and are the silent majority thankfully.
I know of several people myself within the hobby who nighthawk, but there is
nowhere to go with that information and the police are certainly not
interested unless a crime is being committed...that can be proven. I'm going
to the Night Hawking Report follow-up conference next week and will be
interested to see just how English Heritage and the National Council for
Metal Detecting propose to deal with this insidious puss filled boil that
needs to be lanced.
I have been a detectorist for 30 years and this issue has been around a lot
longer than I have been detecting, time to pull the lead in and throw the
book at some people who have laughed their way to eBay and other sources
that can be found in the back of the hobby mags with no questions asked and
the best cash prices paid!
Well done the BBC for bringing this to light, I hope they find the two guys
in the film and convict them, but I won't hold my breath.

Subject: [BRITARCH] nighthawking vs metal detectorists
The problem, as Gary wrote, is that nighthawkers are thieves, and there is
merit in his comparison with equating all car drivers as "drunk drivers".
Of course, car drivers are licenced.......
