The workshops:
The first three of five workshops in film and sound archives take place in
December:
Wednesday 9th December 2009 @ North West Sound Archive Clitheroe, Lancashire
- speakers include Andrew Schofield from North West Sound Archive,
Marion Hewitt from the North West Film Archive and Ken Howarth of Heritage
Recording Services. Alongside sessions on managing film/sound collections
and outreach activities, practical sessions will enable attendees to see,
first-hand, basic film and sound archive management processes in action.
Monday 14th December 2009 @ East Anglian Film Archive, Norwich
- Jane Alvey of the East Anglian Film Archive and Jonathan Draper
of Norfolk Record Office will lead this workshop which will address the
management of film and sound archives, digital preservation and the transfer
between analogue and digital media. Again, practical handling and basic
media transfer sessions will give attendees first-hand experience of film
and sound archive material and processes.
Monday 25th January 2010 @ Wessex Film and Sound Archive, Winchester
- David Lee of Wessex Film & Sound Archive and Martin Astell of
Essex Record Office will address issues of film and sound archive
management, while Matthew Addis from the University of
Southampton/PrestoPrime will address issues surrounding digital
preservation. There will also be practical sessions on handling media and
transferring sources held in analogue form to digital media.

If you are currently, or about to start, dealing with film and sound
material but don't know where to begin then these workshops are for you.
By the end of the workshop you will be confident enough and knowledgeable
enough to begin tackling your collections of film and sound material.
If you already have experience of working with audio-visual material the
workshops will reinforce your knowledge, ensure you are up-to-date with best
practice and give you a chance to network with others.
These workshops, jointly funded by Skillset Film Skills Fund, the sector
skills council for Creative Media, and supported by the Centre for Archive
and Information Studies at the University of Dundee, will take place in
venues that manage film and sound material. Delegates will get the
opportunity to not only hear from experts in the field of film and sound
archives, but also to handle media and, at some venues, undertake basic
digitisation processes. The exact programme will vary dependent on venue
facilities and expertise of speakers.
The 2 remaining workshops are as follows:
Glasgow, BBC Scotland - late February 2010 (date tbc)
Aberystwyth, National Screen & Sound Archive - mid March 2010 (tbc)
Charges for the workshops have been kept low at £15 for members of the
Society (£20 for non-members) and bursaries of £30 to contribute to
registration and travel are available.
These workshops represent great value as the expertise available is
considerable. After the workshop, delegates will be able to take the first
steps to managing their collections of film and sound material, with greater
confidence and a clear understanding of the issues they face in doing so.
If you would like to book your place on the first of these workshops in
Norwich, Clitheroe or Winchester then please complete and submit the booking
