The Hydrosocial Cycle: Between Hydrology and Critical Social Science
Organizers: Jamie Linton (Queen’s University [Canada]), Rachael McDonnell (Oxford University) and Jessica Budds (Open University)
Building on previous sessions at the 2007 and 2008 AAG meetings, this session aims to further explore water research at the interface between hydrology and society. Reworked from the traditional hydrological cycle, the hydrosocial cycle provides a framework for investigating the intersection between water and society. It focuses on the ways in which social factors – both material and discursive - increasingly shape flows of water in the hydrosphere, and, simultaneously, how the materiality of water influences water governance and social relations. For this session, we invite papers from researchers whose work critically engages with the theory and practice of hydrology and water management, in ways which transcend standard interdisciplinary approaches. We are interested in contributions from scholars from a wide range of fields besides geography, including but not limited to: anthropology, sociology, political economy, political ecology, governance studies, science studies, historical geography and environmental history.
If you are interested in participating in this session, please contact the organizers by 15 November:
