Hi,
Perhaps a better question would be, which e-Portfolio do you use 'with' your
VLE.
If students are producing a lot of work within the VLE, then there are
benefits to allowing the simple transfer of evidence from the VLE to the
e-Portfolio. So, something like Mahara (http://mahara.org/), which seems to
work well with Moodle might be a logical choice.
At another level, it could be a requirement to allow delegates to take
advantage of single sign on to access the VLE and e-Portfolio.
Personally, I was quite impressed by work carried out at Dumfries & Galloway
College, who recently won the Scottish e-Assessment Award for their work
customising the WordPress platform to a very student-friendly e-Portfolio
system. They've added a lot of functionality that you find in commercial
systems, as well as a good administrative back-end that allows for the
management of e-Portfolios by lecturers.
The key thing though, is that the team at D&G (Duncan Gillespie and Robert
Brown) have come up with a way to allow students to take away a
fully-functioning e-Portfolio when they leave the college. Not a fixed image
on a CD that can no longer be updated (not exactly supportive of 'life-long
learning'), but a FREE fully-functioning system.
Here's a link that leads to a PDF that summarises their entry to the Awards:

If you're interested, it's definitely worth chatting to Duncan and Robert
directly (they've been helping various institutions set up similar systems).
Oh, and they use Moodle at D&G too!

Hi, Niki,
May I question your thinking? Despite accepted institutional thinking, I
see no reason why the e-Portfolio should be embedded *IN* the VLE. Surely,
if the learner's e-Portfolio is to be learner-owned and fully portable from
one institution to another or on to the workplace, then it should be
independent of any VLE?
