> By the sixth century there was a monastery at A.'s tomb at Orléans. Robert
II le Pieux rebuilt its church in the early eleventh century.
it may have originally been a [Benedictine] abbey, but Pious Bob's
reconstruction of it after the Vik's pillaging included an institutional
change, transforming it into a "Royal Collegial" (or, as some here might
insist, a "Royal Collegiate") church, one of several which either he or his
wife founded or re-founded (the St. Mary's of Melun and Etampes being two of
the most notable).
St. A. of O. was firmly under the Capetians' control, its most notable 12th c.
abbot perhaps being Stephen of Garlande, Louis VI's [sometime] Favorite,
chancellor and Mover & Shaker.
