medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
(assuming that this subject is of general interest to the list.)
"original" inventories would, of course, be nice to have; but the information
to be found in post-medieval sources would be *vast* in comparison to those.
for Chartres, for example, one might begin (looking at post-med. inventories)
with those made for the cathedral chapter during the Wars of Religion, when
the king was pretty hungry for anything of value; then pillage the massive
inventories made during the revolution, when *everything* was up for grabs and
almost all of the reliquaries were stripped of anything of intrinsic value.
somewhere, recently, i came across some sort of early modern inventory which
was very, very detailed --i don't recall whether it was from Chartres of not.
maybe something will jar my rickety memory...
there is, i believe, an "inventaire des joyeaux" from the 16th c. which was
published by Maurice Jusselin (?or whoever was the archiviste at the time) in
the Memoires of the Soc. Arch. de l'Eure-et-Loir.
most important --but hard to use because there is no index-- will be the
various "Inventaire(s) sommaire(s)" of the E-et-L archives, which are
available for downloading here:
http://www.archives28.fr/ec/index2.php
(the Series G & H --secular and regular clergy-- will be most useful)
here's what looks to be a list of some/all of the inventaires from other
depatements available en ligne:
http://genea-bricolo.over-blog.com/article-5948881.html
though that site seems to be mainly interested in parish records and suchlike
stuff useful to genealogists.

> Dear Colleagues,
>
> I’m trying to compile information on medieval relic-lists and inventories
from continental Europe, whether published or unpublished. As far as I know,
there has never been any attempt to create a handlist of them except for
England, so instead I am turning to all medievalists for help.
>
> Prior to c1200, a list of relics may survive in a book used in the liturgy
(such as a gospel book, sacramentary, or confraternity book) as part of a
treasure inventory; embedded in a chronicle or even a charter; in the margins
of a biblical commentary; as an inscription on an altar or a reliquary; as
part of a foundation notice, and doubtless in a range of other places I
haven’t yet identified. From the 12th century on, they also occur in
archives, as administrative documents.

> I would be very grateful if you could send details of any relic-lists and
inventories known to you (especially ones prior to 1204) to me at
<[log in to unmask]> . When I have collated the information you supply into
a handlist, I’ll make it available for everyone’s use. Thank you very
much for your help!
