medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John Dillon recommends two URL shorteners. Firefox users can
also get the ShortenURL add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11423
This adds a button to the browser toolbar next to the address
bar, clicking which automatically generates a short URL from your
chosen default service or one selected from a menu (from over
100, including the best known like TinyURL.com and Bit.ly). The
new short URL appears in the address bar, and if one has the
option selected is also automatically copied to the clipboard.
Of course, because URL shorteners mask the actual destination, it
is not advisable to click short URLs except from people one
trusts. One way to respond to this not unfounded concern is to
give both the original long URL and the short version; however,
some shorteners like TinyURL also provide a preview service. For
example, the list archive is at
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=MEDIEVAL-RELIGION
This URL is of course not terribly long, but it seemed the
obvious site to use for demonstration. Here is a TinyURL for it
http://tinyurl.com/yj5la2q
This will take one straight to the site, while using
http://preview.tinyurl.com/yj5la2q
will show the destination URL and a link to it, so that a
recipient can see where s/he's going before clicking the link.
