We put the books on public display with a paper slip in it giving the reserver's borrower number (barcode) but not their name.

> In Cambridgeshire, along with the introduction of RFID
> terminals for issue and return at some of our larger
> libraries we have also started to put customer holds on open
> shelves in order to enable self-service here as well.
> Mindful of privacy issues we wrap the items in plain paper
> and write the customer's name on the spine for ease of identification.
>
> So far we have had no complaints about privacy but quite a
> few about wasting paper on the wrappers; staff also find the
> process more time-consuming than the simple insertion of
> bookmark style slips that we used when the process was
> mediated at a staff desk.
>
> We'd be interested to hear of the experiences, good and bad
> of other library services who have adopted self-service for holds.
