The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing is a major inter-institutional initiative led by Trinity College Dublin which aims to produce a massive improvement in the quantity and quality of data, research and information relating to older people and ageing in Ireland. It will involve interviews on a two yearly basis with a large cohort of people aged 50 and over, and will collect detailed information on all aspects of their lives, including the economic dimension (pensions, employment, living standards etc.), health aspects (physical, mental, service needs and usage etc.) and social aspects (contact with friends and kin, formal and informal care, social participation etc.)
The study will involve both survey interviews and physical and biological measurements to be carried out by trained Nurses in specially equipped centres and in respondent homes. The sample size envisaged for the main survey is 8,000-10,000 people, and the project is currently being planned across a ten-year time horizon. The study will be closely harmonised with leading international research to ensure adoption of best practice and comparability of results.
