The MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Research Centre at
the Institute of Psychiatry is advertising Medical Research Council (MRC) and
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) supported PhD Studentships to
start in September 2010.
The Institute of Psychiatry has an outstanding international reputation in the
field of research, was judged to have the highest research power of any
institution submitted to its unit of assessment in the Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE) 2008 and was awarded the highest (5*) rating in the previous
two RAEs (1996 and 2001).The MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental
Psychiatry Centre is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research group that
combines genetic and environmental strategies in order to study how nature
and nurture interact in the development of complex behavioural dimensions
and disorders. The Centre is equipped with a DNA resource centre and
extensive modern laboratories.
The Centre welcomes applications from candidates with a good first degree in
behavioural, biological or mathematical sciences for its PhD research
studentships. These are available for the Centre's unique four-year
interdisciplinary course, which includes a taught component in the first year
(after which an MSc is awarded). The first year includes training in social,
genetic (both quantitative and molecular), developmental and cognitive
approaches to psychiatry and psychology, as well as a module in statistical
genetics. For students wishing to learn about molecular genetic techniques,
laboratory-based training can form a substantial component of the
multidisciplinary research degree. The programme includes continuous
involvement in Centre research on such topics as: antisocial behaviour,
anxiety, autism, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and
language disorders.
Further information on research conducted at the Centre and the PhD
programme can be found at: http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/departments/?
locator=10
Applicants for each research council studentship should have, or expect to
gain at least an upper second class honours degree in an appropriate subject.
The research council studentship stipend will be paid at RCUK rates (currently
£15,100 per annum) for the duration of the award and fees are met. Limited
funding is also available for conference attendance and consumables.
To apply, you must register and complete the application form online using the
King’s College London application system at: https://myapplication.kcl.ac.uk/ .
Please select “Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Full Time” from the
drop down list. We are unable to accept any applications sent directly to the
Centre.
Please note that because this is a unique four-year interdisciplinary course, in
the first instance you will be applying online for the MSc year but it is
expected that successful applicants proceed to the PhD. This is not a
Master’s only programme.
In your application, you MUST include:
i) why you want to take the four-year interdisciplinary course at
the SGDP
ii) your research interests
iii) whether you are eligible for a Research Council studentship. If you
are only eligible for "fees-only support", it is still worth applying as the
department sometimes has other forms of funding. Please clearly state your
eligibility. The eligibility requirements are here:
http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Applicanthandbook/Studentships/E
ligibility/index.htm#at
iv) confirm that your two academic referees are aware that you are
applying for a four-year interdisciplinary course which includes a taught MSc
component in the first year
More information about MRC studentships is here:
http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Studentships/index.htm
For those who are not eligible for a Research Council studentship, we will
consider applications only if you are able to obtain funding in the form of
fellowships or sponsorship from other funding bodies.
