Area of responsibilities/description of the work
We are seeking a highly qualified person with a strong record of scientific
accomplishments and interest in teaching to strengthen academic research and
education in biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet.

The research performed under the leadership of the successful candidate
should ideally strengthen or complement the current focus areas in our
biostatistics group, which include register-based research, statistical
genetics and genetic epidemiology, and high-throughput data analyses. The
successful candidate will be involved in training and supervision of
postgraduate students in epidemiology and biostatistics in collaboration
with other researchers in the Department. We are looking for applicants with
a solid background in biostatistical methodology. Applicants must have
contributed to the field as demonstrated by scientific publications in
leading international journals in biostatistics or related disciplines.
Applicants must have developed an independent research profile as principal
investigator.

Qualifications
The applicant must have a doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics or
closely related disciplines, be an active researcher and committed to
postgraduate supervision and teaching. Furthermore, we require pedagogical
teacher training (comprising at least 5 weeks) or equivalent. Previous
collaborative experience in medical research is highly desirable.

Assessment grounds
When assessing the applicants we will particularly consider scientific
accomplishments, research collaboration, experience in postgraduate
education and supervision, and leadership skills. In the assessment, the
merits of the applicant will be weighed as follows: Scientific skills (3),
pedagogical skills (2), skills in leadership, development and collaboration
(1).

Form of employment:

Karolinska Institutet aims to promote equal opportunities by encouraging a
balanced gender distribution. We therefore particularly invite women to
apply for this position. We also value the qualities that ethnic and
cultural diversity can contribute to the university.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, MEB,
(http://ki.se/meb) was formed in 1997, and is based in the Northern Campus
of KI and today employs approximately 220 persons. At the department
research is carried out within etiologic, clinical, genetic and molecular
epidemiology and within biostatistics. The Department has extensive national
and international collaborations.

MEB’s academic biostatistics group is the largest of its kind in Sweden and
among the largest in the Nordic countries. At present the group comprises of
approximately 20 people, including 3 full professors and 3 senior lecturers,
7 PhD and 5 MSc-level research-biostatisticians, and 2 graduate students,
and we are continually recruiting more postdoc-level researchers. The group
is involved in theoretical and applied biostatistics research, especially in
the areas of statistical genetics, bioinformatics and registry-based
epidemiologic modelling. Collaboration with medical researchers is
especially strong, because, instead being a separate unit, the group is
fully integrated in the open research environment in Department. The
biostatisticians are also closely involved in teaching and supervision of
graduate students in epidemiology.
