Applications are invited for the post of medical statistician to join the
NHS Support Team of the Centre for Statistics in Medicine (Director:
Professor Doug Altman) in Oxford.
The support team provides expert statistical input into collaborative health
research. Projects include phase II-III national and international
randomised controlled trials and observational studies. The statistician
typically collaborates directly with the lead researcher, taking
responsibility for the design, analysis and clear interpretation in public
dissemination whilst working to agreed deadlines. Some projects are in
collaboration with a UKCRN Registered Clinical Trials Unit. The support team
also carry out methodological research, offer statistical advice to
researchers and run statistical courses.
The NHS support team is mainly funded by the NHS and funding committees
covering all health leading to a variety of diseases within their projects.
The NHS support team is one of two such teams at the Centre for Statistics
in Medicine, the other being the CR-UK support team. These two teams include
10 statisticians in total with a further 6 statisticians employed in the
Centre. The Centre carries out collaborative medical research projects, a
methodological research programme and teaching. Members of the Centre
have a particular interest in randomised controlled trials, diagnostic
accuracy studies and prognostic studies. The Centre is part of the
Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford and is
located in an attractive site at Wolfson College in North Oxford.
You would be expected to provide major input into a number of concurrent
collaborative projects as the primary statistician and would deal directly
with the multi-disciplinary project team. You would also be expected to
teach on an annual course for clinicians and scientists. The successful
applicant is likely to have a postgraduate qualification in applied or
medical statistics, and several years’ relevant experience working as a
medical statistician.
Located in a stimulating statistical environment with career enhancement
encouraged by CPD and opportunities for methodological research, this post
is offered on a full time basis (although part time would be considered),
and is available immediately for three years.
