medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Meg,
I've read several 15th c 'vonnissenboeken'(punishmentsbooks) of western Dutch cities, but only in view of finding out about punishments for environmental misdemeanors. There were very few. But in Brielle in 1492 Cornelis Jacobsz and Gerrit de Backer, who threatened and scolded the 'dogbeater' of the town, were fined to carry a wax candle of, respectively, one and of a half pound dressed in their linens and afterwards to ask forgiveness of the aldermen (S.M. Auwarda-Berghout, Regesten op het Correctiebouck der stede van Den Briel 1478-1634, 10 (Brielle 2003) 29-30). I have seen several other instances of punishments like this in the cities of Dordrecht and Haarlem.
Henk

Dear Henk,
References, please? If memory serves, I could dig up an analogous example of an Icelander
carrying a candle - in Rome! The details may not be accurate, but the fact that this was
done in Dutch cities (when is "late medieval"?) might have been known to the author.
Meg
