AAG 2010 Call for Papers
Urbanity and mobilities: Geographies of higher education
Organizer: Subhadra Roy; Queen Mary, University of London.
Mobilities of ?highly skilled migrants? including educated
professionals and students have been brought to focus recently by
geographers. International students are considered a subset of highly
skilled migrants, which ties in with the discourse on ?brain
circulation?. Global student mobility now involves over 2.7 million
students who study outside their own country, according to OECD report
of 2006 (Kell and Vogl, 2008). Intrinsic to the idea of mobilities is
the position of urban centres; to and from which such migrations
occur. Urban centres play a major role in not only creating but also
sustaining relationships between individuals like students,
professionals like faculty members, and the university. Mobilities of
students and other educated professionals to cities and towns not only
nationally, but also internationally, raise many questions about the
relationship between ?the town and the gown?. Intricately related to
that, are the identities of not only the individuals, but also the
identities of the urban centres in question.
The session aims to draw attention to the complex nature of these
relationships, and to create a space for discussions/debates about the
key themes and concepts related to the ?geographies of education? at
different scales and different socio-cultural contexts. Through its
focus on the intersections of education and mobilities, the session
will further debates about transnationality and the role of urban
centres in creating cosmopolitan spaces.
Key themes include but are not limited to:
- Internationalisation of higher education
- Social networks and transnational practices
- International students
- Education and mobility
- Cosmopolitanism
- Postcolonial urbanism
To encourage a more interactive and lively conversation, the
presentations will be followed by a discussion. Please send your
abstracts of up to 250 words to Subhadra Roy ([log in to unmask]) by
October 21, 2009.
