Apologies to all. I gather my message of a few minutes ago was unreadable by some email systems (thank you, Adam, for pointing this out). Below is what I meant to say+ICY-

A proper response must depend on the reason for the question. If it is asked with the hope of gathering a few ideas that might be useful, then ad hoc responses will do of course. But if the idea is to try to build up a proper idea of +IBw-what is available out there+IB0- then I+IBk-d suggest a more structured approach is desirable +IBM- and probably a more limited question, because if you include +IBw-tools+IB0- such as +IBw-survey monkey+IB0- then the field is almost uncountably large.
To structure the question (or the answers), you+IBk-d need to classify +IBw-tools+IB0- in several ways.
The most complex facet for classification is probably the area of IM/RM you are dealing with. Fortunately, there exists a model you can use as a starting point, namely the AIIM +IBw-Roadmap+IB0- for ECM, available free at http://aiim.co.uk/index1.asp. This shows succinctly just how broad the question is.
Another facet will include the +IBw-kind of tool+IB0-. By +IBw-kind of tool+IB0-, I mean, for example:
+ICI- End-user application
+ICI- Administrator utility
+ICI- Analytic method
+ICI- Information gathering software
+ICI- Information gathering approach
And so on +IBM- and on, and on...
I don+IBk-t know of an existing typology here. I+IBk-d be interested if anyone does know of one.
Then there would probably be a facet dealing with +IBw-status+IB0-, something like:
+ICI- Commercial
+ICI- Public domain
+ICI- Unpublished
+ICI- +ICY-
And, depending on your purpose, maybe more facets.
I played a small part in an international project to develop just such a database many years ago (EC project HECTOR 2082). It did not go very well, sadly, so I don+IBk-t think any of its results will be helpful.
Good luck,
Marc Fresko

Subject: Useful tools and techniques in the RM/IM World
Morning all,
Apologies for the rather bland and almost lazy question, but it is Monday morning and all my team are on leave - so over to you kind folks....
Ignoring e-DRM solutions, MOSS/WSS and all other third party document management systems, does anybody know of any other useful 'tools' that can improve thedelivery/concept of managing your information and records.
For example, we are currently trialing with a view to purchase a 'tool' that is an Outlook plug in that allows you to file emails in standard folders on your shared drives, or you can add locations from SharePoint servers. No hardware installation was required and it removes emails from the email server.
Another tool I am currently building is an interactive email decision tree which users can access instantly to determine the state of their documentation (i.e is it ephemeral, local, working copy or corporate sort of thing)
We also determine as a 'tool' the particular use of the survey monkey website where we can perform record surveys, questionnaires, information audits.
I am aware there are certain tools out there for encouraging aspects such as macro appraisals (vs functional appraisals), identifying corporate authenticity, scanning etc but we are looking at this at low level cost, if any as the 'tool' could even be just documentation or some form of template that has been effectively used.
All suggestions/approaches/aids are welcome.
Bring on the vendors......
Thanks for your time
Richard
