Two Research Fellow Positions available to work on OR and Statistical
Modelling linking Weather and Health (2 year project).
The ability to predict weather offers the potential to provide valuable
information that can be used in planning health services. For example, imagine
a hospital planning system that was able to predict fluctuations in demand for
different services as a consequence of meteorological predictions and
forecasted major meteorological events. An EPSRC funded project will design
and build such a decision support tool by exploring and quantifying the
relationship between weather patterns and extreme weather events, and their
impact on various health conditions, such as heart attacks, stroke, asthma,
and fractures. Two Research Fellow positions are available as part of this
exciting collaborative project involving Cardiff University (Prof. Paul Harper),
the University of Southampton, (Dr Sujit Sahu), the Met Office, Cardiff and
Vale NHS Trust, and Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust. Both
Research Fellows will work closely with one another as well as the project
partners.
School of Mathematics, Cardiff University
Research Fellow in Operational Research
Salary £29,704 - £35,469 per annum
You will have a PhD in OR, or equivalent research experience. A background in
discrete-event simulation modelling and queueing theory, with strong computer
programming skills, is highly desirable. The main role of the research associate
will be to design and build a web-based hospital decision-support tool for
predicting demand and corresponding hospital resource needs over a short-
term planning horizon.
This post is fixed-term for 2 years and will commence on 1 January 2010, or as
soon as possible thereafter. Informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Paul
Harper, telephone +44 (0)29 2087 6841, email: [log in to unmask]

Southampton
Research Fellow in Statistics
Salary £29,704 - £35,469 per annum
You will have a PhD in Statistics, or equivalent research experience. A
background in Bayesian statistical modelling and Markov chain Monte Carlo
computation is highly desirable. The main role of the fellow will be to conduct
high-level Statistics research into the quantification of the relationships
between weather patterns and emergency hospital admissions for a number of
different health conditions through the development of hierarchical Bayesian
models.
This post is fixed-term for 2 years and will commence on 1 January 2010, or as
