I agree entirely. I did consider re-validation, but only for a moment.
As you suggest, it is time consuming. But how does a freelance,
independent trainer and consultant even begin to prove that they are
'doing' CPD? And there is no detail as to what form the "light touch"
will take. I take CPD very seriously and I spend an hour at least each
day going through my RSS feeds, Twitter alerts, email alerts,
newsletters etc for news and innovations in the information world. I
also present at conferences and try and attend the rest of the events to
learn from the other presenters. But would that be sufficient? I don't
have time to attend training and conference events other than those in
which I am directly involved.

But many of those who *are* doing a good job *are* keeping up to date
via newsletters and electronic networks relevant to their subject,
although they might not regard it as CPD. It's part of the job. And many
of the best that I have met are not members of CILIP (shock! horror!!).
