There is an ongoing dilemma of releasing staff from public service duties in order to allow them to undertake training, especially when "off-counter" time is limited and libraries open pretty much whenever staff are in the building. We have a number of Frontline trainees and are facing the same problems with NVQ also.
We are still attempting to integrate training time into normal staff working hours (even more of a problem with P/T staff) and providing any necessary cover through existing staff hours. Any time worked out of the normal working pattern is taken as time in lieu at some point rather than paying overtime.
It all got me thinking whether the Library Profession has missed a trick in terms of INSET days. If schools can have 6 days staff training p.a. and even local G.P.s surgeries are not open an afternoon a month for staff training, then surely we can argue for something similar for library staff?

I have a staff member doing the Frontline Reader Development Training Online
course. She does this during her working hours. As far as I know all members
of staff will be doing this course.
I wondered if anyone else is doing this at the moment and how that works
with timetabling and and staff cover. Is cover automatically given when the
course is compulsory?
