Job Description
Job title: Senior Information Scientist/Specialist

Job Dimensions and Justification
Map of Medicine Ltd is a highly successful business with a UK market
leading position in the provision of actionable healthcare knowledge in
the form of best practice clinical pathways. The Company is a wholly
owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation, reporting into Hearst Business
Media operating group.
The role of the Senior Information Scientist is: to create, manage, and
audit the performance of bespoke searches of the medical literature; to
create systems to sift the results of such searches, as defined by
inclusion/exclusion criteria; and to assess the remaining articles, with
a view to appending a recommendation to clinical and editorial
colleagues as to the value of the article to Map of Medicine's clinical
pathways.
Searches will need to be conducted in well-known medical, health and
social care databases, as well as on web-based resources that are not
indexed in databases. The role will involve leveraging existing
resources within Hearst Business Media, as well as advising on and
implementing software solutions to manage the whole process.
Specific Duties:
* To understand the current processes employed by The Map
* To understand Map of Medicine's information needs and their
implications for searching and critically appraising medical, health and
social care evidence
* To understand the search and information management processes
used by other companies within Hearst Business Media, particularly Zynx
Health
* To understand the assurance requirements being required of The
Map and to help define what changes are needed in our processes to meet
them
* To propose and create a system to identify Map of Medicine's
required evidence and information, considering inhouse searches and
leveraging other resources within Hearst Business Media
* To audit the performance of the search system once created, and
adapt it according to feedback and changing needs
* To assist in Map of Medicine's endeavours to seek further
clients in other territories where the information landscape may differ
* To assist in the development of new products by helping to
understand the information that may be available to use and how we might
harness it
Critical performance areas
* To understand the literature searching requirements of Map of
Medicine
* To work with existing resources within Hearst Business Media
* To create workflows for searching, filtering and appraising
information
* To proactively audit the performance of the search workflows,
and amend as necessary
Experience - required
* A thorough understanding of bibliographic databases
* A thorough understanding of the services and techniques used to
search bibliographic databases, and their strengths and weaknesses
* A broad understanding of clinical practice
* Proven experience of staff supervision (management experience
would be an advantage)
* Experience of working within diverse teams, with differing skill
sets
Experience - desirable
* A thorough understanding of evidence-based medicine, its
methodologies, its strengths and its limitations
* A willingness to think beyond specific dogma within the
'evidence-based medicine' ethos
* Experience of working within editorial workflows, with examples
of innovation within the workflow (experience of setting up workflows
would be an advantage)
