Hi Sarah
Do you know, I've never thought about this but yes, of course there are other PDF readers. However - and I may be wrong on this, so publishers please jump in - most websites with full text do work under Adobe as a default, and Adobe is suggested as a downloadable PDF reader on most e-journal sites.
I have been musing on a related issue though which is that of PostScript files (.ps extension). Some e-journals do only have articles in this format but as far as I know there is no open source reader which is readily available. GhostViewer seems to be the best reader for these files, and in some cases they can be read with Adobe - but not all.
Nuance PDF is a new one to me and I'll check it out!
Thanks
Louise

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] PDFs articles for those without Adobe Reader
Hi all,
Apologies for this slightly strange question.
We've discovered a bit of an issue just now with a colleague who has
something called Nuance PDF Reader who has been trying to download
articles from ScienceDirect - he just couldn't. I've checked their
system requirements, and it seems they only support Adobe Reader, so
that anyone who is using something else like my colleague, will come a
bit unstuck!
I must say this is all news to me - perhaps I'm missing something - but
it does occurr to me that this is a bit of a problem, and wondered if
anyone knew of any other platforms where this might be the case? I
imagine there must be a fair few potential users out there using open
source PDF readers for example and I just cannot believe that they would
also come unstuck! I know it's not a big problem to actually download
Adobe Reader, buy some either can't (my colleague, for example, can't as
Nuance PDF is now his un-defaultable default!) or won't, and it does
seems a little wrong.
Any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
Best wishes,
Sarah
