Hi
Like many of you I'm contemplating the best mechanism to get us switched over to Shibb 2 in the near future.
I particularly liked the idea that Adrian Barker gave me last week (thanks Adrian :-) of just putting in a proxypass from the existing shibb 1 IdPs Apache for the Shibb 2 endpoints to the new Shibb 2 IdPs Tomcat (running on a different box), hence running both in parallel for the switchover.
(You can even run both shibboleth versions on the same machine as Rhys pointed out, but I want to update the java and tomcat versions at the same time)
As part of that I'm thinking about what platform to run it on. When I deployed Shibb 1 in Tomcat 5 with an Apache front end the received wisdom was that I should do that under Linux, and I used SUSE which has been fine. However, I've since been playing around with deploying test IdPs (and SPs) on my own windows XP machine and have been pleased with how straightforward it is both to deploy and manage.
So, I'd be interested to hear views from the community, what are you all doing? It would be interesting to hear from as many people as possible, are you running your IdP under Windows or under Linux and why - If you email me directly I'll summarise for the list.
We've had a bit of discussion here about whether you even need Windows Server to run it! If its running on its own dedicated box (or VM?) seeing as its just an Apache, a Tomcat and one app why not just run it on a cheap copy of XP and save the server licence fee? Thoughts? (I don't have much to do with Windows Server so there may be implications?)
TIA for any input
