Dear Penny
The simple rational is that we are all in business but what matters is
what we do to deserve the money we earn. There is no place in my world
for
people to do business and not offer quality in return hence if I am
found
to protect and harbour those benefiting from immoral business practices
as
you described then I deserve to be ridiculed in public.
I am sure the same is true with my colleagues in this sector and
everyone
will back me on this statement.
Best wishes

Yes, all of this is more than valid, and we need to work on these
questions too, to find the best ways of properly briefing trainers. This
is also another reason why it is important that genuine needs are not
cynically exploited for unwarranted profits rationalised by the rhetoric
of 'business'.

In no way do I condone this as a means of appropriating business.
However, I have seen all too many cases where a trainer has not been
made fully aware of the nature of the disability beforehand, and was
therefore unable to give the student full value.
In a case of my own recently, I was asked to do some specialist
training for a blind girl in producing braille. I was not informed
until I arrived that she was mildly autistic as well as blind.
Had I known about the former, I would have been able to seek
professional advice from the college concerned, and/or sought advice
from professionals on this list.
Needless to say, by not being prepared, it was not a good day.
George Bell.

Dear Colleagues,
Some students have recently mentioned that their computer supplier is
asking to see copies of their needs assessment in order to 'arrange'
their training. The aim is to appropriate business for the company
concerned rather than arising from an act of service necessary for the
delivery of support to the student. This is not ethical conduct;
breaching principles of confidentiality, in spirit if not in letter.
Colleagues will know that, wherever possible, and with some notable
exceptions, I am recommending to students and on reports that
suppliers
of hardware do not deliver assistive technology training. This is
because of repeated incidences of conflict of interest, as well as
inadequate service to students along this fault line.
Kind regards,
Penny Georgiou
