Hi,
Could you check and confirm if dog urine is a major contributing factor?! I
have handled quite a number of such cases.

Hi all,
Please can anyone help with a problem that we have on a former landfill site
that we are investigating under Part 2A of the EPA 1990.
Something within the vapour in the boreholes appears to be corroding our gas
valves - refer to the attached pictures. The most corroded one was replaced
last year and has probably been at site for approximately 18 years - (photos
6 and 7 - photos 4 and 5 show the replacement valve going through a similar
process). The others were installed in 2007 (pictures 9-12, photo 8 shows
the metalic sheen on the bottom of the inspection cover) and are in various
stages of corrosion.

The corrosion is only noticed on valves located in the most gassing
boreholes, so I don't think it has anything to do with a bad batch of
valves. I also contacted a supplier and they have never heard of this
happening before. Apparently, they are constructed from brass with a nickel
plating.
Some brief history of the site - it's a former landfill tipped until the mid
to late 70s and filled with commercial, industrial, household and possibly
chemical wastes.
Worst case gas results for this site are 30l/hr flow, 60%v/v CH4, 40%v/v
CO2, 0%v/v O2, 2500ppm hexane and rarely H2S up to a maximum of 8.8ppm.
We are hoping to undertake some vapour sampling in the near future so any
thoughts on what may be causing this will be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Andrew Taylor
