Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics

Full-time Fixed term: to 31 March 2013
£49,175 - £54,983 per annum

Applications are invited for a Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics in the 
Forensic Psychiatry Research Unit based at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, City of 
London.  Research in the Unit focuses on the epidemiology of persons with 
Antisocial and high risk behaviours at the population level and the 
development of new methods and statistical models of risk assessment for 
these behaviours in the future.  The Unit conducts national surveys, 
longitudinal studies, and has evaluated mental health services in the U.K.

The post will contribute to the delivery of high quality research by making 
significant research contributions to the field nationally and internationally, 
teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students by request, and 
conducting administrative tasks that facilitate the above.  The Research Unit 
is currently in receipt of a substantial programme grant from NIHR and the 
post is central to its delivery.

The appointee will have an excellent track record in research including 
publications, grant awards, conference presentations and the supervision of 
other statisticians in training within higher educational establishment.  
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent either in Medical Statistics 
or Epidemiology or Applied Statistics, with good experience in handling large 
and complex survey datasets. Good statistical modelling knowledge and skills 
are desirable.

Location:	Currently based at William Harvey House, West Smithfield, 61 
Bartholomew Close. The postholder may also be required to carry out duties 
on other College/Hospital sites.

Job Purpose 

The senior lecturer is expected to contribute to the delivery of high-quality 
teaching and research in a manner that goes beyond that expected of a 
lecturer, by sustained contribution in research and teaching in Epidemiology 
and Statistics, and in administration:

•To maintain high standards of research and the application of a sound 
methodological approach in Forensic Mental Health (FMH), complementary to 
the overall research strategy of the Institute in order to enhance the research 
profile of the field. 
•To contribute to the organisation, delivery and assessment of teaching of 
undergraduate and graduate students in the School.
•To undertake such administrative, managerial, and other duties as are 
reasonably to be expected of a senior member of academic staff, as agreed 
with the Centre Lead and DoI.


Main Responsibilities 

Research: 

1.To engage in scholarly research for the advancement of knowledge in 
epidemiology and medical statistics with a specific responsibility for research 
developments in the area of Forensic Mental Health
2.To plan protocols and write grants to seek funding for research projects and 
clinical trails
3.To take part in joint research within and outside the Forensic Psychiatry 
Research Unit
4.To provide independent scientific input into research activities within the 
Research Unit
5.To engage in other programmes of research which would be complementary 
to the research activities of the Research Unit 
6.To provide support to other researchers in the East London NHS Foundation 
Trust (ELFT) to develop their own areas of research in FMH
7.To offer a statistical consultancy to members of the Academic Section of 
Forensic Psychiatry and staff of the John Howard Centre, Hackney, by 
arrangement
8.To arrange seminars by outside speakers and provide statistical training in 
research methods
9.To develop national and international research links and a high profile in the 
subject or field by attending and presenting at national and international 
conferences.
10.To publish research results using well-regarded means, such as high impact 
factor peer-reviewed academic journals, reputable publishers, and conference 
proceedings.
11.To play a significant role in the Unit’s regular research group meetings, to 
attend journal club meetings, seminars, audit meetings, etc. 

Teaching: 

1.To engage in the teaching of epidemiology and medical statistics to 
postgraduate trainees
2.To teach on courses offered by the Research Unit and the East London 
Forensic Psychiatry service
3.To participate in the administration of the Research Unit’s teaching
4.To contribute to the Medical School’s undergraduate teaching programme in 
medical statistics

Administration:

1.To participate in and support the organisation of seminars and journal clubs 
organised by the Research Unit and John Howard Centre
2.To undertake administrative, managerial and other duties as are reasonable 
to be expected of a statistician and as agreed with the Head of the Unit
3.To attend staff meetings as required, as well as those of other relevance to 
the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, as agreed with the Institute 
Director

Other

1.To carry out responsibilities with due regard to the College’s Equal 
Opportunities and Health & Safety Policies
2.To demonstrate the ability to develop leadership qualities in relation to the 
Centre’s research/teaching/administration. 
3.To further the Centre’s academic development, and to take an active 
interest in the Centre’s activities.
4.To participate in courses, conferences and other activities (eg appraisal) 
associated with personal and professional development.
5.To ensure they are fully aware of and comply with the College’s/Trust’s 
policies and procedures in relation to, inter alia, confidentiality, health and 
safety at work, COSHH regulations,  (and where appropriate infection control, 
safe handling of drugs, and all local safety rules regarding fire, chemical, 
radioisotope and gene manipulation hazards).
6.The postholder must at all times carry out their responsibilities with due 
regard to the College's Equal Opportunities policy.
7.To undertake such other duties as may from time to time be reasonably 
expected by the Head of the Research Unit and Director of Institute
8.The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive, and the 
postholder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such 
administrative and other duties as may from time to time be reasonably 
expected of a member of academic staff in a university.
9.These duties will be subject to review in line with the changing requirements 
of the Centre, Institute, School or College, and with the development needs of 
the postholder as identified through regular review/appraisal processes.
This job description sets out the duties of the post at the time it was drawn 
up. Such duties may vary from time to time without changing the general 
character of the duties or level of responsibility entailed. 
Such variations are a common occurrence and cannot of themselves justify a 
reconsideration of the grading of the post.
 
	

Decision Making

•With senior colleagues and the Centre Lead, to contribute to decision-making 
processes about the long-term RAE strategic planning, research direction and 
teaching activity in the Centre/Institute/School.
•To contribute to, and on occasion to lead in, decision-making regarding the 
appointment of staff and research students within the Centre/Institute.
•Medium and short term planning of own research goals and research related 
activity over a 1-3 year period, (complementary to the overall research 
strategy of the Centre, Institute and the School.), consulting with senior 
colleagues regarding which funding bodies to approach and when. 
•Within defined research areas, using expertise, imagination, experience and 
judgement to decide which course or topic to pursue, what to discard and 
how to design and execute the work.
•Within defined curricula, using experience and knowledge (and an 
understanding of the students’ background and abilities) to design lectures, 
seminars and practicals and then to assess progress.


Working Relationships & Contacts 

•Staff within the team or research centre:
-Daily interact with research collaborators, orally and by email in order to 
achieve research objectives and generate papers for publications or 
presentations.
-Liaise with academic colleagues over collaborative teaching, orally and in 
writing, in order to ensure efficient, successful and reflective course delivery, 
as required.
-Instruct and support undergraduate students and research staff who 
contribute to departmental teaching programmes through written 
communication, formal and informal oral discussions and appraisal, weekly or 
as required.

•Staff outside the team or research centre:
1.Request support and advice from and exchange information with 
administrative departments in the School/College in order to support effective 
research and teaching (eg Joint Research Office over application for and 
management of research grants, and the Education Directorate over student 
matters)
2.Student Staff Liaison Committee, Teaching and Learning Committee, 
Learning Disabilities Support Group.

•Students:
-Teach, advise and facilitate the learning of students in formal teaching 
sessions such as lectures, seminars, PBL tutorials, one-to-one supervision to 
help them achieve their best potential. Oral instruction, discussion, advice and 
response, written notes, questions, comments and feedback in a variety of 
media (paper, email, web) on a daily basis in term time and to a more limited 
extent out of term time. Full capacity to act as personal tutor to students.

•External Contacts:
-Frequent contacts with national and international academic colleagues within 
discipline
-Occasional acting as Journal collaborators
-External committees and boards as required
-Consultancies as required 


Dimensions 

•Obtain income and manage own research funds (see Appendix A for annual 
grant income expected per TR)

Person Specification 

Qualifications
PHD or equivalent in Medical Statistics, Epidemiology or Applied Statistics.

Experience

1.Have an excellent track record in research into Statistics or Epidemiology as 
evidenced by publications in scientific journals and presentations at 
conferences and seminars. 
2.Experience in the production and publication of high quality research, 
including the promotion of such activities through conferences, symposia and 
the like.
3.Experience in writing research grants, obtaining peer-reviewed grant funding 
for research.
4.Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and examination 
preparation.

Knowledge

1.Ability to develop own research interest.
2.Ability to provide supervision to researchers in their research.
3.Ability to supervise postgraduate students pursuing higher degree
4.Good teaching abilities
5.Demonstrated ability to obtain research grants
6.Be willing and able to contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre, 
Institute, School of Medicine and Dentistry and the College.
7.Be aware and have an understanding of developments in higher education, 
including the requirements for research assessment and teaching quality 
exercises.
