Hi Hari,
Christian is the Guru behind the code of the TOM, but if I may go out on
a limb here, does anything else work in your installation? The question
is, do you have compiled binaries for you 64bit linux system in the
first place? Try
V = spm_read_vols(spm_vol(spm_select));
and choose any of the template images, in the spm directory (or any
other image you know not to be corrupt). If this (and other procedures
within spm) run without error, than it may indeed be an issue with the
toolbox, in which case I would kindly defer to Christian :)

PS: If you start with spm now, why not use spm8?
