Dear Joe,
DICOM images come in many different flavours, and SPM will read only a
few of them. Especially, I am not aware of code that would read colour
DICOM images. The difficulties you are experiencing also suggests, that
image position information is not in the places where SPM expects them.
You should try to export plain greyscale DICOMs directly from your PET
scanner and work on these.

At the moment, I'm having trouble converting the DICOM PET images I have to
a format supported by SPM8. I've tried using the 'DICOM import' function
with no luck. When I run through the procedure, I locate the DICOM images,
and select an output folder. I then see a progress bar in the window labeled
"SPM8" which tells me it's "reading DICOM headers"; it gets to 100%, then
pauses, then MATLAB shuts down completely. I look in the folder where the
converted image(s) is supposed to be and no files are there.
I've tried using Adrian Imfeld's dicom2nifit converter located at
http://aimfeld.ch/neurotools/neurotools.html. This script uses SPM
functions. I get the following:
"Converting 202 DICOM-files (can also take some time) ...
??? Reference to non-existent field 'ImageOrientationPatient'.
Error in ==> spm_dicom_convert>sort_into_volumes at 323
orient = reshape(vol{j}{1}.ImageOrientationPatient,[3 2]);
Error in ==> spm_dicom_convert>convert_standard at 219
hdr = sort_into_volumes(hdr);
Error in ==> spm_dicom_convert at 52
fstd = convert_standard(standard,root_dir,format);
Error in ==> dicom2nifti at 338
spm_dicom_convert(hdrs, 'all', 'flat', format);"
I've tried using MRIcro as well. If I try the "Import->Convert foreign to
Analyze" function, I get a message stating that "Color images cannot be
converted to Analyze format". If I run through the "Import->Conversion
wizard", I actually get an output file, but the resulting image doesn't look
like the dicom files. It looks like it has the first 1/8 of the
subject's head.
I've been staring at this problem for a few days now. Here's something else:
the CT images I have convert from DICOM to Analyze with no problems. It is
the color PET images that I have that I'm having trouble with. I'm using
SPM8, MATLAB 7.3.0 (R2006b), and Windows XP Professional 32-bit.
