Hi Matt,
As one of the more strident voices calling for the further exploration
of the appetite and opportunities for merger between SoA and RMS, can I
take this opportunity to welcome this joint statement and the speed with
which you have responded to events.
I, for one, look forward to hearing the results of this engagement
process in due course. I believe in your original email that you
indicated that a series of meetings were planned between the various
executive committees in the near future. I assume there are plans afoot
to keep the various memberships (and other interested parties) informed
as to the nature and outcomes of these meetings - perhaps through
publication of the minutes?
With best wishes
Steve

Subject: RMS and SoA Joint Statement
Dear All,
Apologies, I didn't realise that the listserv didn't support
attachments. I have pasted the text of the document below and I will ask
that this document is posted on the RMS website as well

Joint Statement of the Records Management Society and the Society of
Archivists
Dear All,
Further to recent comments posted on the Records Management and
Archives-NRA lists, we felt that it would be useful to clarify the
position of the Records Management Society (RMS) with regard to the
proposed merger of the Society of Archivists (SoA), National Council on
Archives (NCA) and the Association of Chief Archivists in Local
Government (ACALG).
The events leading up to this began in 2008 with a sector review in
which a number of bodies including the RMS were invited to participate.
At that time the RMS Executive Committee decided not to proceed at that
stage as they saw that the review related only to the archives sector
but asked to be kept informed as stakeholders and interested parties, as
did a number of other organisations.
The Records Management Society receives stakeholder briefings issued by
the participating organisations. There was a regrettable hiatus in
communication before the RMS began receiving the briefings which has led
to the current misperception by some of discord
The Executive Committee of the RMS and the Council of the SoA are
delighted by the levels of interest and engagement shown by our members
as demonstrated by discussions over the past two weeks and much of what
was discussed mirrors the intentions of both organisations to closer
working in the future.
Our two organisations hope to continue to work together as friends,
colleagues and advocates for best practice in archives, records and
information management.
If you would like to comment please contact either of us directly.
