medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have not used Word 2003; however, on all versions of Word I've
seen, there have been a certain number of built-in conversion
filters for reading both earlier Word files and other formats,
including facilities to convert from some Mac versions of Word,
and I presume this is how the original Mac files were able to be
read on the PC. Now, I presume that older formats get dropped
along the way as the programme develops; however, if you have a
version of Word running under WinXP, it is probably new enough
for its own native format to be read by versions right up to
date - very few people will, for example, still be running Word
97 or Word 6.0 (which despite its age does work perfectly well
under WinXP SP3, and which I still use for some purposes). My
advice in the first instance would therefore be to open the files
in the newest Word version you have in which they will open, save
them (preferably under slightly altered file names, so as not
completely to overwrite the originals - always a good idea in
case of unexpected results) in the native Word format for that
version, and then try to transfer them to the newer machine.
To do this, open each file in the latest Word version that will
open it, go to File > Save As, and in the dialogue box ensure
both that you change the filename and that under "Save As Type"
(or similar) you select the top option on the drop-down menu
(usually "Word Document (*.doc)" in versions of Word down to at
least 2000).
The one major change I'm aware of between older and newer
versions of Word is the introduction of the .docx format to
replace the old .doc; however, that only occurred to my
knowledge with Word 2007, so I would not expect it to be the
issue here.
Another thing to try would be to have a look in Word's "Tools"
menu under headings like "Options", and check through the various
tabs to see whether there are any file conversion options that
you can set. Also look up "conversion" in the Word "Help" index,
as this should tell you which formats each version of Word is
enabled to convert.
