medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. September) was also the feast day in Paris of Saint-Cloud
"Saint Cloust" - a fine example to illustrate the metamorphosis of some saints.
(Some variant spellings are similar to "Claude" (clau, clou, cloot, cloud) but his Latin
name was not Claudius).
In the Paris Missal (13th-14th cent.) did he have a high graded feast today
as "Clodoaldi confessoris .ix. lectiones" -
In late Roman Antiquity was he mentioned as a beatified King from "Vico novegento"
near Paris: [Cod. Bernensis f.117]
"Parisius vico novegento . Beati Chlodoaldi regis et confessoris."
His supposed noble birth was clearly spoken out by Wandelbertus for today:
"Antistes septenas servat Evortius, *atque
Regali insignis Clodoaldus stirpe sacerdos*.
Et natale sanctae Reginae martyris, cujus gesta habentur. "
Usuard was more cautious with his noble origin: "Item in territorio Parisiacensi, sancti Chlodoaldi presbyteri, tam generis quam mentis nobilitate conspicui. "
"Vico novegento" is supposed to be todays Saint-Cloud outside Paris.
And then do we all know who we are talking about. Or do we?
See the fancy fairy-tale on 'Catholic Online':

The original Chlodoaldus has not only changed identity, but his death
has also been postponed to around the year 568.
