medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I think the simplest answer is that your files are indeed in an "outdated" form of Word, which can be read by your Word 97/2000/XP on your old Dell, but not by Word 2003 on your newer Dell. The simplest way of testing that would be to go to your old Dell, open one or more of your files, and them save them as ("save as") Word 97/2000/XP format. The saved files should then be able to be read by Word 2003 on your newer Dell.
Alternatively, you could install OpenOffice (free) which can read and write in a variety of Word formats.
